Some Of The Best Portable Generators Under $400

Some Of The Best Portable Generators Under $400?

The portable generators I found online that were listed between $300 and $400 were really decent and were very comparable to other models that were listed for $500 or $600. Granted, there were differences between these generators in this price range and ones that were going for $500-$600 but comparable nonetheless.

I found, what I believe to be five of the best portable generators under $400. The lineup has an impressive amount of superstars that make up this category. I think you'd be really surprised to see some of the different models I have listed and will be just as happy with the results as I was.

First Up, The 56475 from WEN

The 56475 from WEN is a sturdy piece of kit for anyone looking for a gas-powered generator, and is easily one of the easiest generator sets to transport around upwards of the 2,000 Watts range.

This is your full-size, heavy duty portable power source that can drive 4,750 surge Watts, with a sustained output of 3,750 Watts. This heavy-duty portable also meets CARB and EPA requirements in all 50 states.

Two folding handles with rubberized grips work with a pair of oversized, rubber-rimmed wheels for easy transport, while a pair of rubber-tipped leg subs keep it stable once set down in place.

This makes lugging around the 223 cc gas engine, an otherwise unwieldy piece of hardware, an easy affair.

This is a full-featured generator designed with portability in mind, and it shows in the features list. An electric start system ensures easy and consistent starts with a flip of a switch, with an automatic voltage regulator, overload protection, and low-oil automatic shutdown coming standard in the WEN 56475.

Just wheel it in place, plug in the cables, and this sturdy kit requires little attention other than refueling and oil.

The XP4400E from DuroMax

The XP4400E from DuroMax is one of their heavy-duty portables, pushing out 4,400 Watt from its 7.0 HP OHV gas engine.

This otherwise bulky model is made transportable by a pair of oversized, rubber-rimmed wheels and a folding handle, making moving and installation a breeze.

This model comes with a stylish Generator Cover made of durable nylon in classic black, protecting the set from dust and water.

The internal moisture barrier lining the inside of the cover keeps off rain and snow from working its way through, as well.

Starting the set is easy with an electric starter built in, which means no more messing around with pull cords when you need power right now. With a 7 HP engine, though, expect this set to be heavier than the usual portable, at 130 pounds out of the box. The wheel kit needs to be installed before it can be wheeled out, so plan accordingly for that too.

The 5981 GP1800 from Generac

This 5981 GP1800 from Generac is a no-frills generator built to run continuously on site, thanks to its 3.5-gallon steel fuel tank that makes up the bulk of this portable.

There’s no wheel kits on this one, though, so choose your spot ahead of time before filling up.

Once filled up and ready, the Generac 5981 GP1800 supplies consistent, steady power from its outlets, which are protected from shorts and overloads by circuit breakers.

The set starts with a flip of the switch, pushing 2,050 starting Watts before settling in for 1,800 Watts of consistent power that lasts more than ten hours at half-load.

The whole set is braced by a cradle of hardened steel tube, an almost indestructible frame that will last long after the rest of the parts have gone. The rubberized wall offsets that prevent damage to your walls is a nice touch, as well. Comes with a 164 cc OHV engine with splash lubrication and low-oil automatic shutdown.

The DS4400 from DuroStar

The DS4400 from DuroStar is just like the brand name suggests - a portable generator set that’s built for durability.

The cradle made of hardened steel tubing provides a sturdy frame for the whole kit, which is made transportable by two oversized wheels with rubber tiles and a compact, folding handle.

The footings end in textured rubber as well, providing extra grip and some noise control.

DuroStar DS4400

The performance of this gas-powered generator is impressive, as well, with 4,400 Watts pushed out at the start, before the DS4400 settles down to a consistent 3,500 Watts. An air-cooled 7 HP gas engine drives this current, which also includes a low-oil automatic shutdown sensor that protects it from damage.

This kit meets all the CARB and EPA requirements, presenting no problems in its use anywhere in all 50 states. The set can also be operated in national parks and forests, thanks to a spark arrestor that cuts down the risk of accidental brush fires. For residential use, the exhaust is rated at 69 dba, making it one of the quieter models in its class.
