Some Of The Best Generators Under $300

Some Of The Best Generators Under $300?

There were a whole lot of generators in the $200-$300 range but I was able to find five fairly decent ones that had plenty of power and actually had very good ratings from consumers. These are a little bit better than the $200 generators we looked at but still aren't anything close to some of the $400 or $500 models out there, which is to be expected.

Below is what I would call some of the best generators under the $300 mark, just keep in mind these are somewhat of a value-based generator and will have nowhere near the capacity or features of a $500 generator but is nearly half the price. These are definitely worth taking a look at if you are looking for generator within this price range though.

The best portable generator under $300...

The Westinghouse WGen3600v Portable Generator can provide 3,600 watts of continuous power and 4,650 watts for surges. With a long run-time of up to 12-16 hours at 50% load, it's a good emergency power source, especially at night when you can't constantly refill your generator.

It accepts three types of plugs through the following receptacles - 5-20R 120V, L5-30R, and a TT-30R RV. For added safety, the outlets come with rubber covers. It may not have the push button start but requires just one pull to get started.

Once the unit is delivered, you can already start assembly. Most generators won't include the oil so that's a good bonus. To use, just load it with oil and gas. The assembly required is for the wheels and foot pads.

The Westinghouse WGen3600v is backed with a 3-year t using it since it already comes with oil, an oil funnel, and a toolkit and requires very minimal assembly and a lifetime of technical support. They also have over 1,500 service locations nationwide so finding one near you won't be too much of a hassle.

The DuroStar DS4000S Gas Powered Portable Generator

The DuroStar DS4000S Gas Powered Portable Generator provides 4000 starting watts and 3300 running watts.

The 4-gallon fuel tank can be filled with unleaded gas and can provide up to 8 hours running time if it's only running at half its load capacity. For the amount of power you get from this portable generator, it's considered a great value for money.

Portability wise, it's not something you can just carry around at 90 pounds and doesn't include the wheel kit by default.

DuroStar DS4000S

If you need to move it around often, then purchasing the wheel kit would be a good option. Otherwise, as a backup generator for your home, it's good enough as it is.

Starting this unit will require a manual pull which doesn't seem to be a problem for the majority of the users. There are a total of three panel outlets - two 120V 20A 3 prong outlets and one 120V 30A twist-lock outlet. The noise level is acceptable at 69 dbA.

California residents, however, must go with another model since the DuroStar DS4000S is not CARB-compliant.

The Sportsmans GEN4000 Gas Powered Portable Generator

The Sportsmans GEN4000 Gas Powered Portable Generator is equipped with a 7.0 HP Gasoline Engine that delivers 3250 running watts and 4000 starting watts. Like most affordable portable generators, this unit doesn't feature an electric start and only has the recoil start but is reportedly easy to run.

It's ideal for use as backup power supply for your home or RV since it comes with 120V RV outlet. The other available outlets are four 120V AC outlets and one 12V DC outlet.

Sportsman GEN4000

On a full tank of gas and with only 50% load, you can expect it to run for 10 hours. If you're worried about noise, its noise level rating is 69 dB, not super quiet but relatively quiet compared to other generators.

There are however two drawbacks - non-CARB compliant which means it's not for sale in California and the lack of a built-in mobility kit. It weighs 93 pounds so moving it would take just two people. Depending on your type of usage, this may or may not be a deal breaker.  But for the price, you already get peace of mind knowing you'll always have a backup power supply in case of outages.
